Young Teens Who Use Sunscreen

State: Hawaii
Measurement Period: 2021
This indicator shows the percent of public school students in grades 6-8 who mostly or always use sunscreen when they are outside on a sunny day for more than 1 hour.

Why is this important?

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the US. Melanoma is the most serious type of skin cancer and the most diagnosed cancer among 25-29 year olds in the US. The primary modifiable risk factor for skin cancer is excess exposure ultraviolet (UV) rays. Sun damage adds up over time, so it is important to protect skin early. Practicing sun safety (using hats, sunglasses, protective clothing and SPF 15 or higher sunscreen) and avoiding indoor tanning can lower the risk of skin cancer.
