This indicator shows the number of age-adjusted emergency department visits for nonfatal firearm-related injuries per 100,000 people.
Why is this important?
Firearm injuries include intentional use (assault and attempted homicide), unintentional discharge, and attempted suicide. People who are injured by firearm-related violence often have long-term physical disabilities and mental health problems like post-traumatic stress disorder. Gun violence became a national concern in the 1980s and continues to be serious problem till this day. According to the National Institute of Justice, initial federal gun crime prevention efforts focused on getting illegal guns off the streets and out of the hands of urban youth. However, over 20 years of intervention research has shown that in order to reduce gun violence, efforts must address both the demand and supply of firearms. Successful interventions have elements of federal-local law enforcement collaboration, community involvement, and targeted intervention tactics.
