EPSDT Children 1-18 Who Received Dental Treatment Services

Measurement Period: 2022
This indicator shows the percent of EPSDT-eligible children aged 1-18 years who received dental treatment services in the past year.  EPSDT-eligible children are those who were continuously enrolled in Medicaid for 90 days during the calendar year.

Why is this important?

The Early and Periodic Screening, Diagnostic, and Treatment (EPSDT) benefit is a part of Medicaid that offers children under age 21 comprehensive and preventive health care services.  Approximately 30% of children in Hawaii are on Medicaid. Tooth decay is the most common chronic, infectious disease in American children. Untreated cavities can cause pain and infections that may lead to problems with eating, speaking, playing, and learning. Early childhood dental visits and ongoing preventive dental visits improve oral health and reduce later costs.
