Births Occurring in Baby-Friendly Facilities

Measurement Period: 2021
This indicator shows the percent of live births that occur in hospitals and birthing centers designated as providing all the recommended elements of care for lactating mothers and their babies (i.e. Baby-Friendly facilities with the following elements: (1) Have a written breastfeeding policy that is routinely communicated to all health care staff; (2) Train all health care staff in skills necessary to implement the policy; (3) Inform all pregnant women about the benefits and management of breastfeeding; (4) Help mothers initiate breastfeeding within one hour of birth; (5) Show mothers how to breastfeed and how to maintain lactation, even if they are separated from their infants; (6) Give newborn infants no food or drink other than breast milk, unless medically indicated; (7) Practice "rooming in" - allow mothers and infants to remain together 24 hours a day; (8) Encourage breastfeeding on cue; (9) Give no pacifiers or artificial nipples to breastfeeding infants; (10) Foster the establishment of breastfeeding support groups and refer mothers to them on discharge from the hospital or clinic).

Why is this important?

Breast milk is the most complete nutrition for a new baby as it offers a perfect combination of proteins, fats, carbohydrates, and vitamins essential for optimum growth, health, and development. It also provides active defense against many early-life diseases including ear and respiratory infections, sudden infant death syndrome, skin, and stomach problems as well as lowers the risk for many diseases later in life including obesity, type 2 diabetes, and asthma. Breastfeeding is also associated with health benefits to mothers, decreasing the risk for type 2 diabetes, breast cancer, and ovarian cancer.
