This indicator shows the age-adjusted rate of emergency department visits for a non-traumatic, dental-related diagnosis as a primary or any listed diagnosis among adults age 21 or older, per 100,000 people.
Why is this important?
Poor oral health can result in significant illness, disease, and even death. Poor oral health is associated with increased health care costs, increased absenteeism, and decreased productivity. Nationwide, there were 2.2 million emergency room visits for dental emergencies in 2016. Medicaid pays for about 70% of these visits for children and about 41% for adults. Most of these visits could be prevented through access to routine, outpatient dental care.
