Pedestrian Death Rate

Select a County
Measurement Period: 2018-2022
This indicator shows the age-adjusted death rate for pedestrians in motor vehicle-related collisions (ICD-10 codes V02-V04 [.1,.9], V09.2).

Why is this important?

More than 7,000 pedestrians were killed on US roads in crashes involving a motor vehicle in 2020. This equates to 1 pedestrian death every 75 minutes.  In fact, 1 in 6 people who died in crashes in 2020 were pedestrians.  Almost half of all crashes that resulted in pedestrian death involved alcohol for the driver and/or pedestrian. Higher vehicle speeds increase this likelihood.  Adults aged 65 and older and children under the age of 15 are at higher risk for injury.
