This indicator shows the percent of public school students in grades 6-8 who do not walk or bike to school because of lack of sidewalks or pathways, unsafe traffic, unsafe intersections or crossings, or unsafe neighborhoods.
Why is this important?
Neighborhoods that support physical activity and active transportation with features such as sidewalks, bike lanes, multi-use paths, or traffic calming see many benefits. Having a safe, accessible environment for travel and exercise can result in safer, more mobile, and healthier communities. Additionally, incorporating physical activity into a daily routine in adolescence increases the chances of becoming a physically active adult.
