Syphilis Among Females

State: Hawaii
Measurement Period: 2022
This indicator shows the number of newly reported cases of primary and secondary syphilis among females in the past 12 months per 100,000 females.

Why is this important?

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum.  It can be transmitted by vaginal, anal, or oral sex.  It is also possible for a pregnant woman to pass it on to her baby.  Syphilis rates in the US have been increasing since the year 2000.  Among women, it is most commonly seen in individuals 20 to 24 years of age.  Syphilis is easily treated in its early stages.  However, left untreated, the disease progresses and may eventually result in serious health problems.
