Breast Cancer Screening

Select a Census Place (City)
Measurement Period: 2022
This indicator shows the percent of women ages 50-74 years who have had a mammogram in the past two years.

Why is this important?

A mammogram is an x-ray of the breast that can be used to detect early signs of breast cancer. An abnormal mammogram leads to further testing to determine if cancer is present. Mammograms may also be used to evaluate known cases of breast cancer. Regular mammograms increase the likelihood of early detection of abnormalities, thus reducing mortality. The US Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommends that women 50-74 years old who are at average risk get a mammogram every two years. Women who are 40-49 years old should consult their doctor about when to get a mammogram.
