This indicator shows the percent of respondents ages 50-75 years who have had either a fecal occult blood test in the past year, a sigmoidoscopy in the past five years AND a fecal occult blood test in the past three years, or a colonoscopy exam in the past ten years.

Why is this important?

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), colorectal cancer is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers in the United States, and is the second leading cancer killer in the United States. The CDC estimates that if all adults aged 50 or older had regular screening tests for colon cancer, as many as 60% of the deaths from colorectal cancer could be prevented. The most effective way to reduce your risk of colorectal cancer is to get screened for colorectal cancer routinely beginning at age 50.
