Women with Post-Partum Depression

Select a County
Measurement Period: 2022
This indicator shows the percent of women who reported that, since their baby was born, they always or often felt down, depressed or hopeless, or they had little interest or pleasure in doing things.

Why is this important?

Depression during and after pregnancy is common and treatable. The CDC estimates that about 1 in 8 women experience symptoms of postpartum depression. Postpartum depression is depression that occurs after having a baby. Postpartum depression lasts longer and is more intense than the "baby blues". Symptoms can include frequent crying, feelings of anger, withdrawal and feeling distant from loved ones, thoughts of self-harm, and self-doubt about parenting. New mothers should all be screened for postpartum depression. Effective treatment can include a combination of medication, counseling and referrals for specific concerns.
