New Cases of End-Stage Renal Disease

Measurement Period: 2020
This indicator shows the rate of newly diagnosed end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients requiring renal replacement therapy per 1,000,000 population adjusted for age, sex and race.

Why is this important?

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) occurs when the kidneys are damaged and cannot filter blood properly.  This causes waste to build up in the body and leads to other health problems such as cardiovascular disease and bone problems.  Although treatment and lifestyle changes can slow the progression of CKD, it is usually irreversible.  End stage renal disease (ESRD) results when the kidneys fail to function.  At this stage, dialysis or kidney transplant is necessary for survival.  In addition to lowering quality of life, CKD and ESRD are very costly to treat.  Maintaining an active lifestyle and a healthy body weight reduces the risk of developing CKD and ESRD.
