Lung Cancer Screening

Select a County
Measurement Period: 2021
This indicator shows the percent of adults ages 55-80 years who are current or former smokers and who received a CT or CAT scan for their lungs within the past year.

Why is this important?

Lung cancer screening can help prevent lung cancer deaths in people at high risk. Adults ages 55-80 years who have a 20 pack-year smoking history and currently smoke or quit within the past 15 years are recommended to get screened for lung cancer using low-dose computed tomography (CT) every year. According to a 2021 report by the American Lung Association, Hawaii ranks last in the US for the early diagnosis of lung cancer, with only 2.8% of high-risk people in Hawaii receiving a CT (compared to 5.7% nationally). Increasing awareness about screening recommendations can help prevent lung cancer deaths.
